A white collar crime convict has blown the whistle on an extortion and drugs racket thriving in Tihar jail by filing a complaint against jail officials.
NEW DELHI: A white collar crime convict has blown the whistle on an alleged extortion and drugs racket thriving in Tihar jail by filing a complaint against jail officials before a city court on Friday. Christopher James, the complainant who is lodged in jail number 7 for a cheating offence in Connaught Place, has alleged that the deputy jail superintendent and the assistant superintendent and some jail convicts were involved in a criminal conspiracy of extortion of money coupons (issued to inmates as wages for labour put in inside the jail) and using these for smuggling of drugs and tobacco in jail.
In a complaint filed before additional chief metropolitan magistrate Kamini Lau, James said when he raised these issues with the officials he was beaten up and deprived medical attention for two days. Lau took on record a copy of James' medico-legal case (MLC) report - prepared in jail hospital at the time of treating him for injuries inflicted during the alleged beatings - and said: "The allegations involved are of serious nature. In view of the same, the written complaint filed before this court is directed to be checked and registered as per rules."
"Witness be called from jail hospital to prove the MLC of the complainant dated November 7 2006...witness from the office of director-general (prisons) shall appear with the record of his complaint and inquiry, if conducted, on the complaint,"Lau said. Fifty one-year-old James, a resident of Nehru Nagar in Patna, has been in jail since February, 2005. He first raised his voice against corruption in jail in July last following which jail superintendent of jail number 2 was punished.
Thereafter, he alleged, he was shifted to jail number 7 and when he tried to point out the foul play in this jail to the Tihar chief he was victimised by officials allegedly controlling the extortion and drug racket. He alleged he was beaten with sticks on October 24 2006, denied medical attention for two days, kept off insulin injections and then shifted to enclosures which house terrorists and desperate criminals. The ACMM has sought a report on the matter from DG (prisons) by February 13 and directed him to take steps to ensure James in not put to further harassment in jail.
